Rear diff humming after off road trip, who actually knows diffs?
Took the Wrangler out to the dunes near Al Ain two weekends back and ever since there's been this low hum from the rear that kicks in around 60 and gets louder the faster I go. It's not screaming yet but it's definitely new and I don't want to be that guy stranded on the side of the road with a seized diff. Problem is I've asked around and most garages just want to drain and refill the fluid and send me on my way, which feels like putting a bandaid on a broken leg. What I really need is a top Jeep differential specialist who will actually open it up, check the gears and bearings, and tell me the truth instead of guessing. Has anyone here had diff work done and how did you know the shop was legit? Did they show you the wear pattern or the old bearings? And is it smarter to rebuild or just swap in a used unit if it comes to that? Trying to budget for the worst case here.
